  Kwack received her Master’s degree in Education and her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from Ewha Womans University in Seoul. She has worked as an instructor at many institutions including the U.S. Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Embassy to the Republic of Korea, the American Culture Center in Seoul, Citi Bank and McKinsey & Company. Currently, she is a Korean language instructor at the Korean Language Education Center of Sogang University and at the KAIST Graduate School of Business. She has written the book; 《바람난 한국어》.

  저자의 말

  It has already been 25 years since I began teaching the Korean language. What started as something fun has now become a career. It has been a pleasure teaching Korean to students at the American Embassy in Seoul, the American Cultural Center, Sogang University, several multinational companies, KAIST, and other places, while also learning about other cultures.

  As a first generation teacher of the Korean language, I feel a strong sense of responsibility not only to my students but also to the Korean language and culture. It is important that people around the world come to better understand our culture and our language. It is this sense of responsibility that has led to the writing of this book.

  As the number of Korean language students has grown, so has the number of teaching materials published. However, a textbook to promote learning that is quick, effective, and fun does not yet exist. Thus, this book has been produced. It can be used by people learning Korean on their own, even if they have no previous exposure to the language–hence, the book’s title 《MAGIC KOREAN》.

  The teaching methods used in this book have been developed for and tried out by foreign students at KAIST. The results were astonishing. Each semester, students learned enough Korean to live comfortably in Korea and communicate easily with local people at a basic level.

  I hope that all who read this book will enjoy such results and that the book will satisfy their desire to learn Korean and enrich their lives.

  어느덧 한국어를 가르친 지 25년이 되었다. 재미있다는 단순한 이유로 시작한 일이 평생의 직업이 되었다. 그동안 미국대사관, 미국문화원, 서강대학교, 다국적기업, 카이스트 등에서 학생들에게 한국어를 가르치면서 그들의 문화를 배우며 즐겁게 일했다.

  그 과정을 통해 나는 한국어 교육계 1세대로서의 사명감이 생겼다. 세계 각국에서 우리의 문화와 언어를 알고자 노력하는 그들의 열정에 보답하고 싶다는 생각이 든 것이다. 그리고 이는 이 책을 쓴 계기가 되었다.

  최근에는 한국어 학습자들이 늘어나면서 한국어 교재도 많이 출판되었다. 하지만 빠른 시간에 재미있게 효율적으로 한국어를 배울 수 있는 책이 마땅치 않다는 말을 자주 듣게 된다. 따라서 이 책의 목표를 그것으로 정했다. 빠르게, 쉽고 재미있게, 한국어를 혼자서도 공부할 수 있는 책. 또한 경험이 없어도 한국어를 잘 가르칠 수 있는 책. 그래서 책 제목도 《매직 코리안》이라고 하였다. 책 제목에 걸맞은 교수법을 연구하고 개발하여 KAIST 경영대학원의 외국인 학생들을 대상으로 시험 수업을 해 보았다.

  결과는 놀라웠다. 세종대왕님의 위대함을 새삼 피부로 느끼게 되었다. 한 학기를 즐겁게 마치고 나면 학생들은 한국에서 생활이 가능할 만큼 한국어를 구사해 낸다. 그리고 한국 친구들과 한국어로 기본적인 의사소통을 한다.

  부디, 이러한 효과가 이 책을 읽는 모든 학습자들에게도 있었으면 좋겠다. 이 책이 한국을 사랑하는 많은 사람들의 달콤한 동반자가 되어 그들에게 기쁨을 주고 삶을 더욱 풍요롭게 만들 수 있기를 바란다.

  How to use MAGIC KOREAN

  This book has been written for those who want to study the Korean language independently and learn it easily. Working just 30 minutes a day, you can acquire the basics of Korean in only one month. Additionally, essential vocabulary and grammar needed to pass the beginner’s level of TOPIK(the Test of Proficiency in Korean) are included.

  Let’s Chat!

  The book presents the basics of practical conversation and commonly used phrases. With regular review, these basics will be absorbed easily and naturally. The vocabulary in this book is practically focused and can be easily applied.

  Vocabulary and Expressions

  Before reading the dialogues in the book, look at the explanations of the words and expressions used. Then, after reading them several times, check your knowledge by covering certain sections or definitions with your hands and seeing if you can complete the sections or define the terms.

  Just Follow Me!

  This part includes lucid explanations by a teacher, as would be seen in a classroom situation.

  Grammar

  The examples in the book are formulated for the easy understanding of grammar. Grammatical concepts are approached in a systematic manner for easy learning. All grammar points covered in the beginner’s level of TOPIK are included.

  Additional Vocabulary

  Vocabulary words are categorized by topic. This section is organized like a dictionary, so that each user can choose words they wish to learn and memorize. The level of importance of each item is indicated by the number of stars.

  Funny Episode

  This section is for review of already learned content. The episodes presented allow readers to review and apply already covered materials in a fun manner.

  Cultural Tip

  An introductory guide to help readers understand Korean culture. The better the culture is understood, the easier it is to effectively learn the Korean language. While reading about Korean culture, already learned vocabulary will also be reviewed.

  매직 코리안의 사용법

  이 책은 혼자 공부하는 학습자들이 한국어를 쉽게 습득하고 활용할 수 있도록 구성되었다. 하루에 30분씩, 한 달 동안 �
�을 반복해서 읽기만 하면 한국어의 기본 구조가 잡히고 기본적인 의사소통을 할 수 있다. 또한, 이 책을 마치면 토픽 초급을 합격할 수 있도록 토픽 초급 필수 어휘와 문법을 포함하였다.

  대화

  실제적으로 가장 많이 사용하는 기본 대화로 구성하였다. 대화를 반복해서 읽다 보면 한국어의 구조가 자연스럽게 잡히고 문법도 수월하게 터득하게 된다. 제시된 대화는 기본 구조이기 때문에 다른 어휘를 사용해 활용이 가능하다.

  어휘와 표현

  대화에서 사용된 단어와 표현을 설명한다. 대화를 읽기 전에 한 번 보고 대화를 여러 번 읽은 다음에 손으로 가려 보며 다시 확인하는 것이 좋다. 출제 빈도수가 높은 단어와 표현으로 구성하였다.

  대화 설명

  본문 대화에 대해 교실 상황에서와 같은 교사의 명쾌한 설명을 덧붙였다.

  문법

  문법을 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 공식화했다. 설명을 명료화해서 문법 학습의 부담을 줄였다. 문법의 난이도가 단계적으로 올라가기 때문에 문법 습득에 무리가 없다. 토픽 초급에 나오는 문법을 모두 포함한다.

  참고 단어

  각 과의 주제와 관련된 참고 단어를 수록하였다. 확장해서 말해 보고 싶은 학습자들을 위한 사전 같은 역할을 하는 것이기 때문에 자신에게 필요한 것만 선택해서 외우면 된다.

  재미있는 에피소드

  배운 내용을 이용하여 에피소드를 구성하였다. 에피소드는 학습자들이 한 과를 끝낸 후 배운 내용을 가볍게 확인할 수 있도록 재미있는 상황을 만들어 본 것이다. 에피소드를 읽으며 복습도 하고 휴식도 취할 수 있다.

  문화

  한국어를 이해하는 데 도움이 되는 한국의 문화를 소개한다. 한국 문화를 많이 알면 알수록 한국어 학습도 효율적으로 할 수 있다. 문화 내용을 편안하게 읽으며 배운 한국어 어휘를 확인할 수도 있다.
